Math and Science Centers Begin!

Math & Science CENTERS!!

I have six math center groups of three or four students. Each group will go to one center per day so I will switch out centers every 7^th day. Confused yet? I start with very basic skills and activities that will progressively get more difficult.J

The first week of school, I start table centers. This gets the students familiar with a rotation. They are very simple, just getting familiar with the various manipulatives and names of the items we will use in math/science centers.

The second week, the fun begins. Here is what I did this week!

COUNTING JAR! This is one of the first lessons we do in our Journeys curriculum. It is just a clear tub/jar with some sort of counters in it. This teaches students to be able to visually count. I made a worksheet that goes with this center. It is a half sheet as we must be cautious of our copy count. J The students will draw what it is in jar, write that number, and then practice writing numbers 1-10.

SCIENCE JOURNAL! This week, students colored the cover page of their journal (which is actually kept in a folder) and drew a scientist. As a group we will discuss tools of a scientist this week.

COUNTING GAMES! Kids love hands on games. I have several that I will switch out throughout the year based on level of difficulty. Here a student is putting the correct about of apples on the apple tree. If you don't have games like this, they are not hard to make.

SORTING! Right now we are sorting by size and color. Gotta love those counting bears! Each student will get their own small bowl of bears to work with.

NOODLES! Who doesn’t like a discovery tub? This week we are digging in a tub of noodles. Who knows what we will find!

BLOCKS! This is always a class favorite. Anything you can do on the floor is always a hit! Right now they have free reign. Next week, they will have number cards and have to build a tower with that many blocks.
