Poetry Center

Each week I introduce a new poem.  We will read it every day and use it during word work.  For example, we may find words that start with, or find the sight words from the word wall.  This week we are working with the poem Way Down South. The kids really like it.  Then, in the poetry center, students get out their poetry folder, which will have a copy of the poem in it, and they will draw the picture and sometimes do additional activities with the poem.  For example, last week for Mary Wore A Red Dress, they had to circle the word RED with a red crayon. Curious minds want to knowdo you have a POETRY center???

  1. Yes! We also have a "Poem of the Week," a Poetry Center, and the kiddos have their own Poetry Binders. I always try to find poems that incorporate our current theme, our high-frequency word(s) of the week, and our letter(s) of the week. Such fun!

  2. Wellllll, I used to when I was "allowed" to do centers. Don't get me started. One of my favorites (and the kids) was printing each word of a poem out on its own card. I would put the poem and the word cards in a gallon sized baggie. They took the poem out and then put the cards in a pocket chart as they "rebuilt" the poem. For organization and easy access, each poem was glued onto a different piece of construction paper. For example, if Way Down South was glued onto green, then all of the word cards for that poem were typed in green. If Mary Wore a Red Dress was glued onto red construction paper, then all of the word cards for that poem were red. Of course, everything was lamnated. :)
We also poetry folders and everyone would get the new poem of the week on Mondays. Maybe I should blog about this????? :)

  3. Great ideas! I use sentence strips but I like the index card idea and coloring coding would be super helpful! Thanks for the tips. By the way...OMG you can't do centers? What???

  6. Love it! Where do you get your poems? I like how this one is short and sweet--not too long for the littles to remember.
